A few thoughts about coffee.

Coffee is ubiquitous in Western societies. Coffee shops are everywhere and medical studies claim its benefits.

So itโ€™s time for us to specifically look for potential harm.

  • Coffee and caffeine will cause the body to forget that it is tired.

  • Caffeine overloads the nervous system (hyper-arousal, irritability, anxiety, etc.).

  • It depletes adrenals, neurotransmitters, gastric juices, minerals, micro-nutrients.

  • It causes blood sugar spikes, increases pulse and blood pressure.

A few observations:

  • There will be withdrawal symptoms when you stop, mainly headaches that can last for days.

  • People sensitive to caffeine will disrupt their sleep if they drink coffee in the afternoon or evening.

  • Coffee may affect your insulin levels. For example, drinking coffee could result in feeling dizzy, light-headed and hypoglycemic if it is not followed by a meal of carbs within a few hours.

  • Coffee and carbs (cake, sweets) may not pair well and could negatively affect blood sugar levels when consumed in combination. Coffee and fats/proteins seems to be fine.

  • If you cannot stay away from coffee, drinking it late morning a few hours after getting up is better than drinking it for breakfast. Doing it later prevents interference with cortisol during wake-up.

There is a lot of money in the coffee business and it is not sold to you for its great health benefits. While a cup once a week is probably fine, a few cups daily is not in line with how our ancestors lived and our bodies evolved.
